Czech Climate Week

UJEP will join the Czech Climate Week in the week of 2-8 June 2025 with the following events:

  • 3rd June at 17:30 Screening of the film “2040” in the Amphitheatre in the UJEP Campus (in English with Czech subtitles, in case of bad weather in the Purple Auditorium of the MFC Building), from 19:00 Discussion of the film with Climate Ambassador doc. Trögl and Sustainability Manager Dr. Kapitulčinová (expected in Czech language, but English speakers are also welcome!)
  • Climate shelf. Offer of books on climate change and other related topics for loan at the UJEP Research Library
  • What do books say about climate? Exhibition of climate-related books in the glass vitrines of the UJEP Research Library

Future Energy: Sustainability or Blackout?
Guest: doc. Ing. Jaroslav Šípal, Ph.D., FŽP UJEP
Discussion on the transformation of the European energy sector. Are renewable energy sources to blame for the Spanish blackout? How will the electricity grids of the future be regulated? Will Lex RES 3, electricity sharing, flexibility aggregation or a massive switch to spot tariffs? Will the Czech Republic build 4 nuclear units (or at least one)? And will we live to see it? Will we manage mass electromobility?

Soil carbon and climate: doom or salvation?
Ing. Jiří Volánek, Ph.D., Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Mendel University
Discussion on the role of soil carbon, soil organic matter and soil organisms
in the global carbon cycle. Does soil have the potential for greater carbon sequestration or does it contribute to greenhouse gas emissions? What processes are involved occur and can be influenced? Is organic farming a salvation or a marginal path? Will new EU legislation help soil protection or will it just new bureaucracy?
